ABOUT US
Bernadine Thomas manages the Village Heights Community Centre NPO. She and her husband have been married for over 20 years and they have 6 children. Bernadine and her family have been living in Village Heights for over a decade.
Village Heights is an impoverished area on the Cape Flats in Cape Town.
Bernadine started her work soon after moving to the area, when she decided that they needed a library in the community because there wasn't one nearby. She said "With the help of Mrs. Van Ryneveld it was possible to complete. They put up the structure and since then we look after children there too."
From this library Bernie and her co-workers have expanded by working with Projects Abroad. They helped with things like the building, community work, fitness classes, and more. They also started meeting with the City of Cape Town and CTEET.

Bernie registered a NPO with the support of The Zandvlei Trust who have adopted The Village Heights Community Center.
The NPO started with the library and the creche and now includes community workshops, outreach programs as well as a knitting and sewing group which was started with the help of Mrs. Van Ryneveld. Participants of the knitting and sewing group are also taught how to manage their own business and they sell their wares at various markets and events.
