FOOD 4 LIFE
Helping The Community
At Village Heights Community Centre, we want help ensure local people have healthy and nutritious food for life, whether this is achieved through the support of our Soup Kitchen, or through our education classes
VILLAGE HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTRE SOUP KITCHEN
Within the Village Heights Community Centre, it is our aim to set-up and begin running a soup kitchen for the local people
What is a Soup Kitchen?
Often staffed by Volunteers, Soup Kitchens provide those in need with a free hot meal on a daily basis. Those working within the kitchen, will prepare and serve a large, nutritious, and simple meal (often, but not limited to soup and bread), which will then be shared with people from the local community, free of charge.
What are the benefits of Soup Kitchens?
There are many advantages to running a Soup Kitchen in areas such as Village Heights:
Sustenance – Soup Kitchen provide people with a regular, nutritious meal, which will help provide them with the energy they need to see each day through. The food is provided free of charge, so that it is readily available to all who need it. In winter months, this service also plays a vital role in keeping people warm and healthy.
Sense of Community – Soup Kitchens are a perfect way of bringing the local community together. By sharing a single meal, locals can build relationships with one another, and also, crucially, with the volunteers running the kitchen. For the Volunteers themselves, this is an invaluable opportunity to talk to residents, and to find out how they can be helped further.
Communication – Soup Kitchens by their nature bring people from across the local area into the Community Centres serving them. This provides those at the centre with the opportunity to inform the local people of the work being carried out by the centre, so that further assistance may be given to them through the other projects available.
Health and Nutrition – Soup Kitchens not only give people access to a tasty meal, but can also be used as a basis for encouraging people to eat more healthily. This in itself can also be used as a springboard to encouraging a healthier way of life as well.
Village Heights Community Soup Kitchen
Establishing a Soup Kitchen in Village Heights will be no easy task. The Community Centre itself currently lacks the equipment needed to make the running of such a service possible, even though it would be a valuable asset to the local people if set up.
For this reason, we, the Village Heights Community Centre, need your assistance in turning this idea into reality.
You can support us in 1 of four ways:
By giving financially to the Centre – This will allow us to buy the equipment and resources needed to establish a Soup Kitchen. Please see the donation page on our website for more information
By providing equipment – In order to establish a Soup Kitchen, a lot of equipment is needed. If you have available any of the following, which you are willing to donate to us, please do get in touch! We would love to hear from you.
Cooker/Heater for making the food
Utensils, such a knives, serving spoons, cooking spoons, pots, pans, and chopping boards to prepare the food
Cutlery and bowls to serve the food in
Tables and chairs for people to eat from
Cleaning equipment, such a clothes, tea towels, washing-up liquid and basins, which we can use following the meal
3. By donating food – The Soup Kitchen itself will rely on a daily provision of food, with which the meals can be created from. If you think you can assist us with this, we would be very excited to hear from you!
4. By giving up your time – If you are available to help us run the Soup Kitchen, please contact us. We would really appreciate the support and extra man/woman-power
